“All right,” Sam said enthusiastically. He hunched forward, his elbows on the table, and scanned the room. “I’m ready.”

Althea plucked his phone from his pocket and pulled up the camera app.

“No more selfies,” Sam groaned.

“Relax, Uncle Sam,” she said. She turned off the flash function and held the phone in front of both of them, then scooched close so her thigh pressed against his. “You have to smile.”

“But—”

Althea sighed. “Would you lighten up? Now, look here.” She tapped the screen, but instead of seeing their faces as captured by the backward-facing camera, Sam saw the dim interior of the club outside their booth.

“See this guy?” she asked. She pointed a ragged red fingernail at a guy at a table, then zoomed in. He wore a black t-shirt that clearly showed muscular arms, and multiple silver chains draped his chest. As he turned their way, Althea snapped a picture.

“Who is that?” Sam asked. “What’s his name?” He was intrigued by the strength those muscles implied.

“His name’s Teddy,” Althea said. “I call him Teddy Bear, but his last name is Brown or Braun or something. I can’t remember.”

Sam studied the man through the camera’s screen. Thick, dark hair, glinting with red highlights when he turned to speak with someone else at the table. A straight, patrician nose, sculpted lips. His expressive eyebrows clearly showed his disdain for one subject of conversation, his humor for another.

“Is he a vampire?” Sam asked. He kept his voice low, which he realized was pretty pointless with the wall-banging music.

“Of course,” Althea whispered back. She was so close her lips brushed his ear. She turned back toward the camera, said, “Smile,” and took another picture of Teddy.

“Now,” she said, moving slightly so the camera’s lens panned the club, “here’s another one. See those three people in that booth?”

The booth was across the room, and even when Althea zoomed in, it was hard to see detail in the dim light.

“Which one?” Sam asked, but he was pretty sure he knew. The two women sat on either side of a slim man, pressing close. One woman was thin and angular, and had a cloud of curly red hair. The other was a buxom black woman, deep cleavage clearly on display, and her glittery blue eye shadow and red lips were evident even in the low light.

“That’s Dante,” Althea said.

This man definitely looked the part. His black hair was slicked back from his forehead where he had a small but distinct widow’s peak. He had sharp, pointed features, almost feral-looking, like a fox. He was dressed all in black, but the long sleeves of his shirt hid any indication of muscles. While he certainly seemed to command the attention of the two women, he didn’t project the raw strength of Teddy.

“Smile,” Althea said, and took a picture. Then one of the women whispered something in Dante’s ear, and he grinned. The single light above their table was reflected multiple times in the man’s teeth.

Althea snapped another picture.

“What the heck?” Sam asked.
